About
About Dual Oceans
The founders, Adam and Rob, have been working as a team for many years, first racing sailboats in competitive scholastic sailing back in high school. Friends since kindergarten, they are now working as a team again, expanding what autonomous vehicles can do in the maritime industry.
Cofounder
Adam Piispanen
Robert Adam Piispanen, who goes by Adam, has spent his career designing and deploying marine hardware in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. His work has ranged from designing dive equipment at Lombardi Undersea, to commercial ROV and AUV inspection at Semper Diving & Marine, to complex offshore aquaculture systems at Forever Oceans, where he led the hardware engineering team. His time at Forever Oceans inspired him to bring his marine robotics background back to the Gulf of Maine and put it toward new technology for the blue economy. He holds a B.S. in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island, with minors in robotics and oceanography.

Cofounder
Robert Grassi
Robert Grassi developed an early interest in robotics while studying at Tufts University, where he conducted undergraduate research in Professor Barry Trimmer's Neuromechanics and Biomimetic Devices Laboratory. His work focused on bioinspired and soft robotics, including 3D printed, tendon actuated robots designed to reproduce principles of locomotion observed in soft bodied animals such as caterpillars. He was also involved with the Tufts Robotics Club, where students designed, built, programmed, and tested robotic systems. These experiences helped shape his continuing interest in robotics, 3D printing, autonomous systems, and bioinspired engineering.

Where the name comes from
The name is simple. Dual Oceans stands for the Atlantic and the Pacific, the two oceans that frame the United States, from sea to shining sea. Adam has worked in both, and the founders want the company to work in both.
How the company works
Dual Oceans is currently a team of two: its founders, Adam and Rob. Adam leads the marine engineering and field work, and Rob leads the electronics and robotics. They're developing their first prototype, Stage 0, an autonomous surface vehicle designed to carry and test custom marine payloads in the Gulf of Maine without the cost of a crewed vessel.
